If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. This week marks the beginning of Lent...will you be giving something up or adding anything to your life during this season of the year?
We don't really celebrate Lent.  However, our church is participating in a church-wide program called Focus 40.  We are given certain readings for each day and we are also to pick a form of fasting. It starts next Wednesday.  It's pretty awesome to know the whole church (not just our congregation) is studying the same thing and praying towards the same goals.

2. The day before Lent is Shrove Tuesday... tradition states you eat pancakes on this day. In some parts of the world Shrove Tuesday is actually known as 'pancake day'. How do you like your pancakes? Or don't you?
Never heard of Shrove Tuesday.  I do like pancakes, but I don't eat them real often.  I like them with a little butter and maple syrup.

3. I'm sure there are many, but what's one love song you really love?
I don't know if this is my favorite, but it is a really good one.  "If" by Bread.

4. What are some things you do to let others know you love them?
Tell them.

5. Roses...red, pink, or do you prefer another color? Can you recall tIs he last time someone gave you flowers? Given your choice would you like to open the door and see a dozen red roses, a dozen purple tulips, or a dozen pink peonies?
I like yellow roses.  If I were to pick one of the three you listed, it would probably be red roses, but I'd really prefer a mixed bouquet of cut flowers.

6. President's Day will be celebrated in America next Monday. Does US Presidential history and trivia interest you? Many Presidential homes are open to the public and offer guided tours...Monticello (Jefferson's home), Mount Vernon (Washington's home), Montpelier (James Madison's home), Hyde Park (FD Roosevelt's home) and The White House (home to the sitting President) to name just a few. Of those listed which would you be most interested in touring? Why?
The White House - just because I've always wanted to go there.  I'd love to see Mount Vernon too.

7. Are you good at keeping secrets?
I think so.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
Opinions please.....Is 7 months too young to try to break a child from screaming and crying because no one is picking her up.  If you know they are not hungry, or wet and they just want to be picked up.  Is it okay to try to just let them cry it out?  What do you think?

  1. Good song, and one I have not thought of in a long time.
As far as the crying, if it's at bedtime, I think it's ok to let her cry for a bit. I was never good at letting them cry and cry, and someone once told me that picking them up when they cry lets them know that they are important and loved. I guess it's good to remember that this too shall pass. Before you know it, she will be wanting to borrow the car! Long days and short years. But you know that. :)

  2. Never heard that song before... or that group. Love finding new things :)

I'm not sure of the age that people consider that PC - but I think every child is different. It cant hurt to try a minute & then maybe another minute. Just sort of break a habit? I'm sure you'd hear every argument for every way to do it.

  3. I love Bread and that song is one of my all-time favorites! I used to sit in my bedroom and sing their songs into my cassette recorder when I was a teenager. Hard as it may be, I don't think it will hurt to allow the baby to cry for a little while. That's how she'll learn to soothe herself.

  4. Oh my I have not listened to that song in ages! I used to listen to them all the time could sing all their songs by memory. Yes, I loved me some Bread!
The question about the crying is a hard one. If you know they are not hurting and you know it is because they are wanting to get their way then no I don't think it is too young. That may sound harsh but you do have to start sometime. I think you have to use your own judgement. I think you have to start setting the boundaries at a young age.
    until next time...nel

  5. I love Bread...Everything I Own is my favorite of theirs, but I love If too.

I think it's okay to try, particularly at bedtime. My suggestion is to start small and set a timer. A minute feels like an hour when a child is crying. I'd put her to bed, set the timer for maybe 3 minutes initially, then 5, then 10 etc. At 3 minutes go in and pat her and reassure her and say goodnight again and leave. Work your way up in minutes. They are all so different. My youngest was not a good sleeper until about 18 months. My oldest came home from the hospital practically sleeping thru the night. I think the mom needs to do what she's comfortable with at that age. With an 18 month old I'd feel differently, but 7 months, she should go with her gut. Try the timer...that really helped me.

  6. As a Grannie, I hate to hear them cry and life is so short that all the touching I can get in is just fine with me. Some kids really need the human contact more than others so your question is a hard one. I guess since you the know the little one, you are the best person to decide how to move forwarded.

  8. I love this song. Haven't heard it in years. Many of the songs I've found on Hodgepodge today remind me of the AM radio playing in my Mom's car when I was a kid :)

  9. I was a huge Bread fan back in the day and "If (A picture paints A thousand Words...)" is a beautiful song. I agree with letting the baby cry for a little while...sometmes they will either fall asleep or get distracted and stop. If not, then talk to them for a second or two...and try again. Good luck!

  10. Yellow roses are the favorite today. Great song! I would love a trip to Washington DC. I wish I could help. I know there is a lot of controversy out there on letting them cry but I also don't believe they should be held all the time.
Show them that you care, give them a hug and put them down again.

  11. From the mom of grown twins one of whom did not sleep through the night until he was 2! If their needs are met and they only want to be held I think it is k to let them cry it. My son wore me out literally when he was a baby. I finally had to let him cry. He is a grown man with a family now and very well adjusted. he is a loving dad and husband.

  12. We celebrate Lent at our church, but I didn't growing up, so I don't give up anything but all 3 of my girls do. My oldest has given up softdrinks and my youngest has given up Sunny D. Funny I know but she drinks about 3 - 5 glasses per day.
