Calling

Joyce at From This Side of the Pond is participating in 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writings in October. This is where they give you a prompt and you write for five minutes and you do it each and every day of October. Now I'm not a big writer (although I keep thinking I'd like to be) so I don't think I could do the 31 days.  However, after reading Joyce's post for Thursday (on the word "Calling"), I started writing a comment on her blog.  The more I wrote, the more I realized I wanted to make it a blog post.  So here is my post on "Calling"

I've been pondering for awhile why I still have to work and why God hasn't given the okay for me to retire. I mean, I've worked here for 39 years as of September 14, 2015 and I really thought I'd be retired by now.  But I'm not and so far God has not let me in on when I will get to retire.  I'm pretty sure I'll be here at least 2 more years (our house will be paid off then) and no more than 6 years (as that is the max for my retirement-45 years).

Since I'm still here, I've been wondering why.  In other words, what is my calling here at work? Recently, I feel He's told me for now my job is to be an encourager to the ones I work with.  So now, that is what I look for, opportunities to encourage someone. And you know what?  I've found I really like encouraging people.  My prayer is that God will open my eyes to see other people like He sees them and that He'll show me ways that I can encourage them.

What I'm finding, is it is helping me to be a little more satisfied with where my life is at this point. Retirement will come in God's time and I know even then He'll have a "calling" for my life. I don't think we necessarily get to completely retire in God's economy. I think as long as we are here, there is always something for us to do for the Kingdom.

  1. GREAT post! And a very worthy calling that's for sure. I believe the world could use a whole lot more of people who encourage others. Such an important job. Now you've gotten me thinking about my calling ??? lol. I guess I just want to bless others with my sewing but I wonder if it counts when it brings me so much pleasure? lol Even though I don't work outside our home and I am technically retired, I don't consider myself fully retired until hubby is. And who knows at this point when that might be. We made too many financial mistakes along the way. But your sooo right. We NEVER retire from doing God's work. I've always admired women who had long standing careers. Look at all you've done! And when you finally retire you will reap all the benefits from your years of doing so in your SS and retirement plans. There is nothing in SS for me as I have never worked outside the home enough. Or when I did it was volunteer. And boy if I had would that help out now as hubby nears retirement. Have a good week-end!
