Black and White Memories

I'm joining in today with Terry from Your Friend from Florida to participate in Black and White.  Click here if you'd like to participate and show some of your black and white photos. Today I just have one picture that I'd like to share with you.

I love this photograph.  Actually it was two separate photos and either my brother or sister seemed them together.  My maternal grandparents (Clint and Mary) are on the left and my paternal grandparents (Elizabeth and Charlie) are on the right.

Grandpa Clint sang bass in many gospel quartets and that is what I remember most about him.  Sometime after this picture and before I can remember he lost the ends of four fingers in a farming accident and was unable to play the guitar any more.  He gave it to my mom and sometime probably in her 30's or 40's she took lessons and learned to play and actually played and sang with him and my dad and an aunt in a quartet.

Grandpa Charlie was a preacher and he could sing too and so could Grandma Elizabeth.  It seems there was always music at our family get-togethers.

They really were great friends and I loved them all.  The 4 of them started the church that I grew up in.  It's because of them that I grew up in church and learned about Jesus.  I'm so grateful for the rich heritage they passed down to all their following generations.

Thanks for visiting.

  1. How cool was it that your sibling could put the two pictures together! You really wouldn't know till someone told you. I'm enjoying everyone's old photos. I know my family has lots of black and white photos, but they haven't come down to me yet. My mom and her sisters still have them.

  2. Now what a clever idea! I may try that with the two pictures. I love the history you shared and that they loved to sing gospel. Your mother learning to play the guitar! How inspiring! I bet your grandpa was so pleased. Sounds like you have quite a spiritual legacy and what a blessing they all started a church together.

    1. Another cool thing is my nephew has that guitar now and he is an awesome player, mostly self-taught.

  5. I've been studying and studying this picture and still can't discern the seam … what a gift! My mom also lost the tips of her fingers ….. to a lawn mower. Tho' she no longer played the piano, she still managed to enjoyed knitting and sewing. Like your grandparents, I love how that generation just went on doing and creating.
