My husband started a study tonight at church on some of the names of God. It's pretty awesome. Here are 10 of the names he mentioned tonight.
# El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty)
# El Elyon (The Most High God)
# Adonai (Lord, Master)
# Yahweh (Lord of the Covenant)
# Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner)
# Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals)
# Elohim (God the Creator)
# Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide)
# Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace)
# Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts)
"Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory [is] above the earth and heaven." Psa 148:13
"The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe." Proverbs 18:10 NKJV
"1 Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, Praise the name of the LORD! 2 Blessed be the name of the LORD From this time forth and forevermore! 3 From the rising of the sun to its going down The LORD's name [is] to be praised."
Psalm 113:1-3 NKJV
If we spend our time thinking about God and praising His name, it's hard to stay worried or depressed. Knowing the names of God, helps us to understand the character of God, which helps us to know God better. That is my desire. Is it yours too? I challenge each one of you to think on God and his character this week and to praise His name each day.
Very neat. I knew all but one of the names and meanings. I love that HE is all those things wrapped in ONE. HE is the beginning and the end. Praising Him sure does take your mind & heart to a different place. I love to worship in His presence.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that just amazing. I always love to ask people that speak another language what their word for God, Jesus and Christ. I always find that interesting.
ReplyDeleteHey Cathy, just a reminder to take the "Pay It Forward" link off the top of your blog. People may think they can still go enter. =0)
ReplyDeleteWhat on earth would you do without me? {{grin}} j/k
Happy Monday!
Erica
Thanks for the reminder Erica!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this today. I never realised there were so many and all the different meanings.

I was just skimming through your blog (which I found through Sarah @ Life In the Parsonage), and this caught my eye. I'm taking a Sunday School Module called the Names of God right now, and my fave so far has been
ReplyDeleteJehovah Tsidkenu, the Lord Our Righteousness.
Blessings :)
