If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Bits of This and That

I was reading another blog and it was mentioned that 2023 was a hard year, but that God had been with them and they were hoping 2024 would be better.  This scripture came to mind so I went and looked it up.  I think this verse is such an encouraging one for starting out a new year.  Deuteronomy 31:8 "And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you.  He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed."  I believe God is already in our days of 2024, preparing the way to help us accomplish the things He wants us to and to help us grow closer to Him and maybe help or encourage others along the way.

A few things from the past week.

*  We had a nice Christmas with my mother-in-law and also one of Tracy's cousins and her husband.  We were a small group, but we had a good time together.  Lots of fun stories told and some really good food.  While it was sad, more of the family couldn't be there because of other obligations, we had a great time together,  The girls did Christmas together as both of their husbands were out in the field and/or driving a truck and couldn't be home.  They filmed Colton opening his gifts so we could watch.  It's not ideal, but we've learned to adjust and make the best of things.

*  We spent some time at church this week and I'm learning some jobs that I hope will help hubby out with all the things he does.  He does so much, so anything I can take off his plate is a good thing.

*  I had mentioned in an earlier post that Lucy hasn't been feeling well and has not been eating very well either.  After taking her to the vet and he checked her out and also did a blood work-up and couldn't really find anything wrong.  He gave her a couple shots and she finally started eating again that evening,  She seems to be pretty much back to normal now.

Here's Lucy sleeping in her bed in the middle of the night last night.  I couldn't sleep, so I got up and grabbed this picture of her in the dark room.  I couldn't see her very well, so I had to kinda guess where she was laying.  I cut off her head, the first time.  lol

*  I finished a good book this week and have started 2 more, but these two will count toward my GoodReads Challenge for 2024.  I had a goal of reading 50 books in 2023 and ended up reading 61.  I plan to set my 2024 goal at 50 again.

*  We had church Sunday morning as usual (the pre-recorded sermon is posted below) and then we picked up some lunch from Chipotle watched another episode of a documentary on the Challenger and then we both took a nap and I worked on a post for my blog and read some.  We went back to church for the evening service and picked up a piece of hot fudge cake from Frisch's for the last treat of the New Year.  We didn't plan to, but we stayed up until midnight and wished each other Happy New Year and we actually got a text from our oldest wishing us the same.  And then 2023 was over and it is 2024.

Happy New Year to all.

Cathy

Beautiful Morning Skies

The last 2 mornings when I've let the dog out I've noticed the sky. The moon was out yesterday morning and was shining between the branches and I couldn't resist getting my camera out and taking a couple of pictures.

Then this morning the sunrise was beautiful and again out came the camera. Then when I was thinking about showing you the pictures here, God reminded me that there is a verse in the Bible that tells us His mercies are new every morning (just like His skies).

I'm so glad that each morning I can start with a clean slate (or as Beth Moore says a do-over). If I ask Him, in His mercy He will forgive me for my mistakes and bad attitudes, etc of yesterday and He will allow me to start over again. So Lord, thank you for a new and beautiful day.

The faithful love of the Lord never ends!  His mercies never cease.  Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:22-23 (NLT)

Hope you have a blessed and wonderful new day in the Lord!

Don't Give Up! Hang in There!

Last night in Bible Study we were studying the 12th chapter of Hebrews and there are just so many good things in there.  But I really liked some of the things that were said about this first verse:

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1

The "cloud of witnesses" in this scripture is the people in chapter 11 where they are talking about different ones that "by faith" they did this and "by faith" they did that. Such as:  " By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac," or "By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaohs daughter,"  We call chapter 11 the Hall of Fame of Faith.

These are the people that verse 1 in chapter 12 is talking about and also our loved ones who have gone on before us.  These are the ones who are our witness and they are cheering us on to the goal.  I think of people like my grandparents and my aunts and uncles that are in heaven.  I love the thought that they are there cheering me on home.  Maybe they are saying things like: get back up Cathy, we all fell sometimes too;  Keep on moving forward;  Keep the goal in sight.  You can do it.  Jesus is right there with you.

So if you're discouraged, Don't Give Up!  Hang in There!  You have a whole crowd cheering you on.

I Never Knew.

Something to think about.

"I NEVER KNEW" The Extent of One Man's "Limited" Ministry
While in a large East Coast city on business, Dan had spent the evening drinking in the hotel bar. Having sworn that this trip would be different, he was feeling pretty disgusted with himself the next morning. He decided a long walk might clear his head and his mood, so he struck out and soon found himself on a narrow residential street. The houses were small but clean, and well kept, and Dan sensed that he had chosen a good direction.
About halfway down the block, an elderly gentleman looked up from his chore of raking leaves, and greeted Dan warmly. "Good morning to you," he smiled. "Looks like the Lord has put together another beautiful day, doesn't it?"
The old man looked at Dan's bleary eyes and rumpled clothing. "You know, son, Jesus Christ could make this the best day of your life, if you'll let Him." He reached into his pocket and handed Dan a small tract. "Why don't you look this over and stop by and see me again?"
Dan half-heartedly thanked his benefactor, stuck the tract into his jacket pocket, and went on his way. He didn't read the tract, but somehow he never quite managed to throw it away. A year later, on another business trip, Dan found himself frantically pacing his hotel room. He was at the end of his rope, spiritually, financially, emotionally, and physically.
By habit, he threw on his jacket and started for the door. But as he shoved his hand into his pocket, that persistent little tract touched his fingers. He pulled it out, went to his bed, and read through its entirety. He opened his nightstand and found the Gideon Bible he knew would be there, and carefully researched the verses the tract had referenced. He was not familiar with God's Word, and was grateful to have a copy readily available to him for just this purpose. After satisfying himself that all the verses listed in the Gospel tract were real, and feeling as if he had reached a point of decision in his life, he then fell to his knees and, at that very moment, ended his old life and began a brand new one in Christ.
The following years of Dan's life were a whirlwind of joy and struggle. He became a minister of the Gospel and was invited to city after city, country after country, to share his love for the Lord and the miraculous way in which the Lord had changed him. Time after time, as Dan shared his message, people would come to him and say, "That's amazing! You know, I was in that same city, took a wrong turn, and stopped in front of a house to ask directions. An old man was working in a flower bed and gave me a Gospel tract."
Each story was different, and yet each story told how people from all over the globe, people who had for many different reasons come to that city, had found themselves drawn to a narrow residential street where an old man worked in his yard.
---
Some time later, Dan returned to the city where his new life had begun. But this time he was there to preach a revival in a local church. Remembering the old man who had given him the tract, he made his way back to the tiny white house. Seeing no one outside, he knocked on the door. A slow shuffle of feet could be heard, and finally the door cracked open.
"Sir, you probably don't remember me," Dan began, "but you gave me a Gospel tract several years ago, and I wanted you to know that it's because of your faithful witness that I now stand here before you as a minister ofthe Gospel of Jesus Christ."
The old man swung the door open wide, revealing a metal walker before his bent and feeble body. "Come in, come in," he told Dan as the tears streamed down both their faces. Dan followed him into a tiny living room.
"Praise God, praise God!" The elderly gentleman's voice shook with age and emotion. "All these years I wondered if I was making a difference. You see, my wife -she's gone now, God rest her soul -was an invalid, and I couldn't get out except to work in the yard. For her last eighteen years, I had to be here all the time, so I prayed every day for the Lord to send me people who needed to hear the Word. What a blessing to know about you, son."
"Oh, sir," Dan told him, moving to his side and taking his hand, "I've heard about you all over the world." And as Dan told of the many people who had come to know the Lord through the witness of this silver-haired believer, the man wept uncontrollably.
"Thank you, Jesus," the faithful old witness kept repeating, "I never knew. I just wanted to be faithful to my Lord!"
"So shall my word be that goeth forth out ofmy mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. J) Isaiah 55: 11, KN.
"Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful." 1 Corinthians 4:2, KN.

Rough Edges and Sandpaper

"So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper." James 4:7 MSG

" Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double‑minded man, unstable in all he does.
The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business. Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." James 1:2-12 NIV

If we must go through hard times (and everyone does sooner or later) we might as well learn something along the way and benefit from it.  I just consider it as though I'm a piece of wood and Jesus is using the hard things as sandpaper and is taking away my rough edges.  Sure does hurt, but in the end I hope to be more like Christ.

I just viewed this video at "Shout a Joyful Noise!" and just had to share it here too.

So let's be encouraged and keep on keeping on!

God is Faithful

Do you ever feel really burdened and overwhelmed and like you're just not going to make it through your circumstances?  I know I have, more recently than ever before in my life.  But we're making it and guess what?  I've actually grown closer to the Lord and stronger in my faith.  Here's a scripture from Paul that I think fits and explains why we sometimes have to go through what we go through.

I think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and completely overwhelmed, and we thought we would never live through it.
In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we learned not to rely on ourselves, but on God who can raise the dead.
And he did deliver us from mortal danger. And we are confident that he will continue to deliver us. 2Corinthians 1:8-10

So be encouraged my friend. If you are going through a hard time right now or living in circumstances you just don't understand.  You will make it through because God is faithful and He will deliver.

Carrots, Eggs & Coffee

I received this story in an e-mail from a friend and just had to share it here.  Hope you enjoy.

A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee....You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up, She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, 'Tell me what you see.'

'Carrots, eggs, and coffee,' she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, 'What does it mean, mother?'

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.

The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened..

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

'Which are you?' she asked her daughter. 'When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.

When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

May we all be COFFEE!!!!!!
