Thankful Thursday - Dad

Below is a post I wrote in March of 2016.  It is about my dad and his passing away on February 16th of that year.  I never posted it because I had tried to attach a video and I could never get it to work.  That and then the fact that I was just starting the year of cancer and all, I just never finished it.  I always wanted to because I did one for my mom and my brother.    Today I was looking at the few drafts of posts that I have started and never posted and read this post.  I had forgotten about the dream that I wrote about below.  I'm so thankful that I never deleted it.  Today, I'm posting it for Thankful Thursday as I'm so thankful for my dad and all he meant to me in my life.  I still don't have the video working, but I'm posting a few pictures of him and if I ever get the video to work right, maybe I'll add it to this post some day.

***********************************************************************

Dad passed away on February 16th around 11:30-11:45 am. I was in the hospital having my port installed, so I was not there. However, my 2 sisters and sister-in-law were there with him.

I had a dream that morning before I went to the hospital. I was walking into dad's room to see him and I could hear my sister talking to someone. There was someone there on or by the bed that I could see from the back. Her hair was white, so I thought it was my mom's mom. However, as I walked around the bed, I could see her face and it was my mom with her face up by dad. I woke up then and knew that this was the day dad was going home. And within a few hours he was gone.

My dad was a special man. He could do anything he put his mind to. He built and remodeled homes. He sold realty. He was a floor mechanic for many years running a flooring business with his brothers. He and mom ran a used furniture store for many years too. He was a fantastic cook (as was mom). He was always there for each of us kids whenever we needed something. Whether it be advice, some kind of work done on our houses or whatever. In fact, if it weren't for dad, Tracy and I wouldn't be living in the house we are. Dad built it for us.

Dad loved to sing too. Besides helping people, I'd have to say, singing was one of his most favorite things in the world. He loved all the old hymns, and southern gospel quartet music. Towards the end of his life when he had lost so much, he still could sing the words to the old songs he loved.

When Mom and Dad married, she was only 17 and he was 22. They both had the same birthday and they got married on their birthday. Last year on June 3rd, they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary and their 82nd and 87th birthdays. Mom would always joke that she married Dad to get off the farm and he said he married her because she knew how to do the farm work. lol

Eventually, when I was a freshman in high school, they bought a small farm. Dad was able to have a few cows and chickens and pigs and horses and sheep and turkeys, etc. The one thing Mom was always responsible for when growing up was milking the cows with her older brother. She never wanted to do that again. Well, for about a year or so on that little farm, Dad had a milk cow. Mom told him she, would take care of the milk, make butter or anything else, but she would never milk that cow, even if it's udders burst. And you know what, she never did!! But she did all the rest without ever a complaint.

I have always known, no matter what, I could go to Mom and Dad with any problem. They always listened and they always tried to give good advice. I appreciate all the help they've given me and my family through all these years.

Here are a couple of pictures of my dad.

God thank you for my dad and all the years I had with him.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. The Hodgepodge lands on National Dog Day this year (August 26th). Do you own a dog? Did you have a dog when you were growing up, or maybe some other kind of pet? Would you say you're more of a dog person or a cat person? Neither is okay too : )
Yes, I own a dog.  Yes, we had dogs growing up.  The first one that I remember was a Boston Terrior named Poochie and my grandparents had her sister, Bubbles.  I am definitely a dog person.

2. Last time you felt 'dog tired'?
Monday night.  I woke up early (5:00am) and by the end of the day, I couldn't keep my eyes open while hubby and I were watching TV.

3. It's said you can't teach an old dog new tricks. When did you last prove this idiom true or prove it wrong?
I think it's false.  I think we can learn what we really want too.  I've recently learned this stitch in crochet and love it.

4. A favorite book, television show, or movie featuring a dog. Why did you love it?
A Dog Named Christmas.  I like it because it was a great feel good movie and it was about a dog and Christmas.  What more could you want.

5. Last time you had reason to (literally or figuratively) exclaim 'hot diggity dog'?
When I got to see both of my girls and my grandson this summer.

Tuesday 4 - Soda Pop

Welcome to Tuesday 4 (Click to link up) which was started by our friend Toni Taddeo and kept up in memory of her.

Different sections of the USA have different words and customs they use. Let's talk about
them.

1. In New Jersey you put your groceries in a paper bag or plastic bag.  In Athens, Ohio where I went to university, you put them in a paper sack.
Is it bag , sack or something else where you live?
We call it a bag.

2. NJ says  Stockings.Athens,  Ohio used to call them "hose" and in Britain they are tights. What about where you live?
Hose but seldom do I see anyone wear them anymore. And I definitely do no wear them.  It's been years since I've even had a dress on.

3.Soda, Pop, Coke?
Pop

4. Shopping cart or trolley or? What do you call it?
Shopping cart.

So how about you, what do you call these things?

Today is my sweet husband’s birthday!  He is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I’d rather do this life with him than anyone I know. He just makes me happy.   Happy Birthday Dear!!!

Wednesday Hodgepodge

Click above to link up.

1. Five years ago this month hubs and I relocated from New Jersey to the Palmetto State. What were you doing five years ago this month?  The same thing I am now, working, going to church, and spending time with my husband.

2. What was the last 9-5 job you worked? Tell us about it. I’m still working in the same place that I started at when I was 19.  I’ve changed positions over the years but I’m still there. In mid September it will be 44 years.

3. Plead the fifth, high five, take five, it's five o'clock somewhere, or the big 5-0...which number five phrase relates to your life in some way currently? Tell us how. Take five. I suppose as I’m getting older I need to take a short rest when doing physical tasks more than I used to. But usually just a few minutes and I’m ready to go on.

4. During this season of spending so much time at home, what distractions get in the way of being your most productive? Or have you been extra productive since this whole thing started?  Since I still work every day, things really haven’t changed all that much for me.

5. Give us a list here of your top five anything. Five things I enjoy doing...reading, watching TV with hubby, taking long drives with hubby, playing the piano when no one is around, going on vacation to the ocean(of course, with the hubby!).

6. Insert your own random thought here. Planning to go to Florida next month for 3 days so I can be there when my oldest goes wedding dress shopping. I’m so excited.
