Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. This week's Hodgepodge lands on Ash Wednesday which signals the beginning of Lent. Do you mark this season in some way? No, not usually. If so tell us more. Did you grow up 'celebrating' Lent? No Is attending church part of your weekly routine? Yes, it is.  My husband is my pastor.  Are churches open for in-person worship where you live? Some are and some are not.  We are a very small congregation so we have no trouble social distancing and most wear masks.  We meet on Sunday morning and Sunday evening and our Wednesday night Bible Study is live on FB and then posted to our YouTube page.

2. When is the last time you sat beside a 'real' fire? I started thinking about this and I really cannot remember the last time and that's a real shame.  Do you have a fireplace in your home? No, we don't have a fireplace.  Wood or gas logs? Favorite thing cooked over a fire? Breakfast. When I was little our church used to meet at a campground and cook breakfast and it was always so delicious.  Actually, that was probably on a grill not a fire as I think back.  As for over and actual fire, I guess it would be a hotdog.

3. Something that's currently got you fired up?  A lot of what is going on in this country right now fires me up.  However, I refuse to talk about it online and I refuse to watch news because I'm trying to deliberately trust it all to God.  Since I am His child, I know nothing happens to me that does not first pass through His Hand and I trust Him.  So instead I'll go with this.  Does it count, that I'm ready for winter to end (all this snow is crazy...beautiful...but crazy!

4. February also happens to be National Cabbage Day. Who knew? Not me.  Do you like cabbage? Yes. Is cabbage on your menu Wednesday? No. Of the following cabbage dishes which is your favorite-coleslaw (mayo or vinegar?), sauerkraut, cabbage rolls, cabbage soup, kielbasa and cabbage, grilled cabbage, bubble and squeak, kimchi, or haluski? Kielbasa and sauerkraut.

5. Do you hang on to pennies? No, not really.  What do you do with them?  I spend them and yes, I do pick them up off the ground when I see them.  Last thing you purchased for $1.00? A Diet Coke from McDonald's.  Last thing you purchased for $5.00? A really nice zip-up journal or note book from the store called "Five Below."  I love it.  I can carry it in my purse and the pages don't get messed up.  I use it to write quotes or scripture that I really like.  Especially those Fear Not verses that remind me of my word this year which is Fearless.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Thank you for visiting and I hope you have a wonderful day.

  1. I haven't had a Coke in over a year but McDonald's has the best soda fountain drinks. I used to frequent the drive through for a large Coke for $1. Your answer about picking up pennies reminded me that there is a shiny penny on my front steps. I noticed it there a few days ago when I was getting the mail. I have no idea why I haven't picked it up yet, LOL!
Thanks for sharing the Isaiah verse. Have a great week :)

  2. What uplifting answers! Yes, I'm not a news watcher either, just can't stand all the ranting and raving. We do watch the local news and sometimes the national at 5:30. Like you, I KNOW whose in control. I've seen the Five Below in areas when we are traveling but, sadly, we do not one. I get my fix at Dollar Tree. Blessings abundant!

  3. Great post! I hear you on the news. There's actually a chart which will tell you which news stations are far left, far right, or middle of the road. Seriously, is it news when it can be reported in such variations?

  4. I like a hotdog cooked over a fire too, but I try not to eat hotdogs these days. I like your word for the year. It's a good one for the times in which we live!

  5. I don't recall ever enjoying breakfast cooked over a real fire -- but my hubby swears by it. I, too, always pick-up pennies ... and have had sanitizer at the ready, even before Covid was a thing.

  6. Loved your answers. I used to LOVE breakfast cooked over a real fire when we went camping as a child or in Girl Scouts. I have done it on a coleman stove when we had a hurricane and the power was out too. Food always tastes better cooked outside. Great answers....

  7. Now that I read your answers, I remembered that on 4th of July 2019, we had a campout for the grands in our back yard and we had a real wood burning fire. We toasted marshmallows and made smores. The things we do for our grands!

  8. Cathy,

I couldn't agree with you more on placing all the worries we see with our country, our world to God to tend to. It certainly doesn't do us any good to get worked up over something that's out of our hands. That takes away from our joy for life and nothing makes Satan happier than to see God's children miserable. So, what do you to combat evil? You stay positively joyful, praying and praising God for all He does. Evil can't be in the presence of such goodness scoring one for the Man upstairs every time! ;) Thanks for stopping by for a visit, darlin'!

  9. Liked reading your answers. I definitely don't watch the news and I'm getting tired of all the politics on Facebook. We must trust in God. Hope you have a nice weekend.

  10. I had to smile a bit on your answer about if you go to church. I grew up in a pastor's home and my husband was a Minister of Music and anything else on a church staff that needed doing for 50 years. Yes, when the doors are open we go to church! Now that we are retired and have moved to another state and city, we are busy finding our place in a new, huge church. God is faithfully opening doors of service even here. Enjoyed my visit with you today and thanks for stopping by my blog on Wednesday. Hope to see you again next week.

  11. Hi Cathy, I'm with you on your answer to #3. In times like these it is nice to be a part of a smaller congregation. I suppose when you aren't in church lots of folk notice. :) Hope you have a great weekend.
